What can you see on the stamp?

How to read a stamp like a collector
Identification is a process of elimination. Start with the script and any words — they usually reveal the region fast. Then the currency: "Pf/Pfennig" points to Germany, "d" or "½d" to Britain and its former colonies, "centimes/francs" to France, Belgium or Switzerland, "kopeck" to Russia, "centavos" to Portugal, Brazil and Spanish-speaking America.
A famous trap: Great Britain is the only country that omits its name from stamps — it uses the monarch's head instead. So a portrait stamp with a value in pence and no country name is very likely British. From there, the subject, color and any dates narrow you down to a specific issue.
The fast path
The app skips the detective work: photograph the stamp and Stampy returns the most likely issue with details and an estimated value, then saves it to your collection. Get Stampy on the App Store ↗
